Tesla Autopilot & Full Self-Driving (FSD) explained in 2026
Tesla’s driver assistance system continues to evolve rapidly. Here’s a clear overview of the current options, major 2026 changes, and practical tips to use it safely and effectively.
Full Self-Driving (Supervised)
Originally €7,500 option. Eliminates the €99/month subscription fee.
This is the most complete package and includes everything below:
- Fully autonomous driving anywhere (with supervision) regulatory approvals are already expanding across Europe. Belgium, the Netherlands, and several other countries have granted provisional approval for FSD (Supervised) on public roads.
- Automatic steering, acceleration, and braking for vehicles and pedestrians in the same lane
- Auto Lane Change – automatic lane changes on the highway
- Navigate on Autopilot – automatic highway driving from on-ramp to off-ramp, including interchanges and overtaking slower vehicles
- Autopark – parallel and perpendicular parking
- Smart Summon – your car comes to find you anywhere in a parking lot (yes, really!)
- Traffic Light & Stop Sign Control – automatic stops at traffic lights and stop signs
Note: Full autonomy depends on the hardware version (HW3 or HW4). (HW3 V14 Lite coming soon.)
Navigate on Autosteer (Enhanced Autopilot)
Originally €3,800 option reduces the FSD subscription from €99 to €49 per month.
- Automatic steering, acceleration, and braking in the same lane
- Auto Lane Change
- Navigate on Autopilot
- Autopark
- Smart Summon
Traffic Aware Cruise Control + Lane Keep
(Basic Autopilot – standard on most older Teslas)
- Automatically maintains distance to the vehicle ahead
- Keeps the car centered in its lane
Note: New Tesla vehicles only come with Traffic-Aware Cruise Control.
Safety Features (Standard on All Teslas 2016+)
All active and passive safety systems are included on every Tesla:
- Blind Spot Monitoring
- Obstacle Aware Acceleration
- Forward Collision Warning
- Backward Collision Warning
- Automatic Emergency Braking
- And many more…
Key Changes in 2026
- Subscription-first model: One-time purchases are heavily limited or removed in many European markets.
- Rebranding: “Navigate on Autopilot” is now Navigate on Autosteer. The FSD Computer is called the AI Computer.
- European Expansion: FSD (Supervised) received provisional approval in the Netherlands and is rolling out to more countries (Belgium, Germany, etc.).
- Software Improvements: Faster Smart Summon, better pothole avoidance, smoother behavior, and new FSD usage statistics in the app.
- HW3 vs HW4: HW4 (newer cameras + more powerful computer) is significantly more capable and future-proof. HW3 often receives lighter versions of new updates e.g. V14 Lite.
